Earlier in September, Emma and a team of her colleagues from the climate action charity Ashden took on the Thames Bridges Trek as a fundraising for Ruby. The team crossed 16 bridges, walking 25km in total, and raised just over £10,000 for Ruby's Fund - an amazing result!
Ruby was a born & bred Londoner who absolutely loved this city and who was, like hr Mum, a bit of a bridge geek. I can conjure up gorgeous memories of Ruby linked to every stretch of the walk.
A few highlights:
➡️ Tower Bridge (where we finished) – crossing the bridge after a wet and windy trip to the Tower of London
➡️ London Bridge – a jet boat trip down the river for my birthday, and laughing at the story of the American who bought the previous version of London Bridge and moved it to Arizona
➡️ Blackfriars - surely the best view of any train station in the world! We’d travel through this station regularly on the way to/from St Pancras and would always enjoy the view – surely one of the best views from any train station in the world
➡️ Millennium - strolling across after a visit to the Tate and admiring the chewing gum art.
➡️ Waterloo Bridge - Ruby’s Year 11 prom, on a boat. She had such a great night! Fun fact: this bridge was built by women during World War II.
➡️ Hungerford Bridge - meeting up with Ruby’s Dad’s cousin Laurie when she was in town from Chicago. Ruby adored Laurie. ‘I didn’t know someone your age could be so cool Mum’ 😂
➡️ Chelsea Bridge – walking up to the Kings Road with teenage Ruby after a trip to the Battersea Park Go Ape.
➡️ Putney Bridge (where we started) - toddler-Ruby dropping her ice cream by the river in Putney only for it to be gobbled up by a passing labrador. There were tears🍦
We left a Pebble for Ruby on every bridge.
One of our team, Fran, created this lovely video of our walk. If this inspires you to do something similar, there are lots of ready-organised event that you can take part in to raise money for Ruby's fund - you can browse them here.
